11.09.2025: We are delighted to announce the very first presentation of the Roland Schauer Award for Young Scientists in Glycobiology of the GBM!
This year’s awardees are Dr. Grothaus (Krakow/Frankfurt) and Dr. Vicente (Hannover), who have been selected for their outstanding contributions to the field. The award will be formally presented at the Joint Glycobiology Meeting in Lille, France (October 12–14, 2025) in partnership with the GBM study group “Glycobiology”.

Isabell Louise Grothaus received her PhD in 2023 from the University of Bremen with a dissertation on the conformational phase spaces of N-glycans under the computational microscope. After research stays at institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, she is currently a visiting PostDoc at the Dioscuri Centre for Modelling of Posttranslational Modifications at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and Max Planck Institute for Biophysics.

Her research focuses on the structural and dynamic properties of glycans, whose conformational flexibility underlies their central role in health and disease. By applying and advancing molecular dynamics simulations, she develops methodological frameworks to systematically map glycan conformational phase spaces and to quantify their structure–function relationships. She created the open-source software tools GlyCONFORMER and-develops GlycoSHIELD, which enable the exploration of glycan conformational ensembles and the visualization of glycan-mediated shielding on proteins. Her studies revealed how N-glycans can modulate enzymatic activity, stabilize catalytically relevant conformations, and thereby shape substrate specificity. This work provides a computational foundation for rational drug design and targeted glycoengineering.

Die diesjährigen Preisträger sind Dr. Grothaus (Krakau/Frankfurt) und Dr. Vicente (Hannover), die für ihre herausragenden Beiträge auf diesem Gebiet ausgezeichnet werden. Der Preis wird im Rahmen des Joint Glycobiology Meeting in Lille, Frankreich (12.–14. Oktober 2025) feierlich verliehen, das in Partnerschaft mit der GBM-Studiengruppe „Glykobiologie“ stattfindet.

Isabell Louise Grothaus promovierte 2023 an der Universität Bremen mit einer Dissertation über die konformationellen Phasenräume von N-Glykanen unter dem rechnergestützten Mikroskop. Nach Forschungsaufenthalten am Max-Planck-Institut für Marine Mikrobiologie sowie an der International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Triest ist sie derzeit als Postdoktorandin am Dioscuri Centre for Modelling of Posttranslational Modifications an der Jagiellonen-Universität in Krakau sowie am Max-Planck-Institut für Biophysik tätig.

Ihre Forschung konzentriert sich auf die strukturellen und dynamischen Eigenschaften von Glykanen, deren konformationelle Flexibilität ihrer zentralen Rolle in Gesundheit und Krankheit zugrunde liegt. Mithilfe molekulardynamischer Simulationen entwickelt und erweitert sie den methodischen Rahmen, um die konformationellen Phasenräume von Glykanen systematisch zu kartieren und ihre Struktur-Funktions-Beziehungen zu quantifizieren. Sie entwickelte die Open-Source-Software GlyCONFORMER und arbeitet an der Weiterentwicklung von GlycoSHIELD, die es ermöglichen, Glykankonformations-Ensembles zu erforschen und die durch Glykane vermittelte Abschirmung von Proteinen zu visualisieren. Ihre Studien zeigen, wie N-Glykane enzymatische Aktivität modulieren, katalytisch relevante Konformationen stabilisieren und damit die Substratspezifität beeinflussen können. Diese Arbeiten schaffen eine rechnergestützte Grundlage für das rationale Wirkstoffdesign und die gezielte Glykobiotechnologie.
