We are delighted to announce the very first presentation of the Roland Schauer Award for Young Scientists in Glycobiology of the GBM!
This year’s awardees are Dr. Grothaus (Krakow/Frankfurt) and Dr. Vicente (Hannover), who have been selected for their outstanding contributions to the field. The award will be formally presented at the Joint Glycobiology Meeting in Lille, France (October 12–14, 2025) in partnership with the GBM study group “Glycobiology”.

Dr. Manuel Vicente is an engineer by training, having studied Biomedical Eng. in the NOVA University of Lisbon (Portugal). During his studies, he developed an interest in the molecular and cellular aspects of Immunology, and later was accepted into the highly competitive Graduate program in Areas of Basic and Applied Biology from the University of Porto (Portugal). In this program Manuel pursued his PhD in the intersection of Immunology and Glycobiology. He is now a postdoctoral researcher in the Institute of Clinical Biochemistry in the Hannover Medical School (Germany).
Dr. Manuel Vicente's work has been focused on the role of glycans (sugar molecules attached to cellular surface proteins or lipids) in immune cell development and function. By studying how the glycome is altered in the generation of immune cells, or in disease, he has uncovered several ways in which glycans regulate the immune system. In a parallel endeavour, he has contributed to the understanding of how glycans may instruct blood vessel formation in immature kidneys. Currently Dr. Vicente is interested in how the glycome of blood stem cells guide blood cell generation, and how this process may be altered in malignancy.

Die diesjährigen Preisträger sind Dr. Grothaus (Krakau/Frankfurt) und Dr. Vicente (Hannover), die für ihre herausragenden Beiträge auf diesem Gebiet ausgezeichnet werden. Der Preis wird im Rahmen des Joint Glycobiology Meeting in Lille, Frankreich (12.–14. Oktober 2025) feierlich verliehen, das in Partnerschaft mit der GBM-Studiengruppe „Glykobiologie“ stattfindet.

Dr. Manuel Vicente ist Ingenieur und hat Biomedizintechnik an der NOVA Universität Lissabon (Portugal) studiert. Während seines Studiums entwickelte er ein Interesse an den molekularen und zellulären Aspekten der Immunologie und wurde später in das Graduiertenprogramm für Grundlagen- und Angewandte Biologie an der Universität Porto (Portugal) aufgenommen du promovierte mit einer Forschungsarbeit an der Schnittstelle von Immunologie und Glykobiologie. Als Postdoktorand wechselte er an  das Institut für Klinische Biochemie der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover (Deutschland). Die aktuelle Arbeit von Dr. Manuel Vicente konzentriert sich auf die Rolle von Glykanen (Zuckermolekülen, die an Oberflächenproteine oder Lipide von Zellen gebunden sind) bei der Entwicklung und Funktion von Immunzellen. Seine  Charakterisierung von Veränderungen des Glykoms bei der Differenzierung von Immunzellen bzw. bei der Entstehung Krankheiten, hat mehrere Mechanismen aufgedeckt, durch Glykane das Immunsystem regulieren. Zudem hat er in einem weiteren Projekt zum Verständnis beigetragen, wie Glykane die Bildung von Blutgefäßen in unreifen Nieren steuern. Aktuell untersucht Dr. Vicente, wie das Glykom von Blutstammzellen die Blutbildung steuert und wie dieser Prozess bei bösartigen Erkrankungen verändert sein kann.
