Working Group Biochemistry in Medicine

University teaching in biochemistry, one of the three major basic subjects in preclinical training, bears a significant responsibility for the present and future quality of human medicine and dentistry. Only a sound scientific understanding of basic life processes enables practicing and scientifically active physicians to initiate diagnostic measures on their own responsibility, to apply drug strategies and to inform their patients about causes of disease, examination procedures, therapy alternatives and nutritional issues with the necessary expertise. Similarly, participation in clinical trials and critical interpretation of research data requires basic scientific knowledge.

With the coming into force of the new medical licensing regulations, as well as numerous reform efforts in medical education, there has been an increasing shift in recent years - particularly in the subject of biochemistry - from teaching scientific theoretical knowledge to teaching clinically practical content. The teaching of essential basics of biochemistry and the scientific way of thinking are in danger of being pushed into the background of an education that is exclusively oriented towards the acquisition of practical professional skills.

The working group "Biochemistry in Medicine" wants to be a platform for the exchange of information and opinions of all lecturers involved in the teaching of biochemistry in medical subjects. In this forum, current developments in the organization, teaching content and examination procedures of these courses are to be discussed and shaped. Interested parties who would like to actively participate in shaping the teaching of biochemistry in human and dental medicine are always welcome. The working group meets at least once a year within the framework of the Mosbacher Kolloquium of the GBM for a personal dialogue and the coordination of further activities.
