Studiengruppe Bioenergetik

The Bioenergetics Study Group was founded in 1975 as one of the first study groups of the GBM and brings together scientists from the fields of biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, structural biology, molecular biology, microbiology and medicine. The members work on a broad range of research topics with the goal of elucidating the fundamental processes of biological energy conversion at the molecular and cellular level. Findings from basic bioenergetics research provide an important basis for biomedical and biotechnological applications.

The work of the Study Group members is frequently presented and discussed at national and international conferences. In 2021, the Study Group organised an international online meeting entitled "Perspectives in Bioenergetics". This meeting followed a long tradition of German-British conferences on bioenergetics. Unfortunately, the originally planned face-to-face meeting in Naurod near Wiesbaden could not take place due to the Corona pandemic. However, the online meeting was a great success with almost 200 participants. The Study Group was also represented with a session at the fall meeting of the GBM "The Molecular Basis of Life" in 2022. The European Bioenergetics Conference (EBEC) is held every two years at different European locations, most recently in Aix-en-Provence. The conference will be held in Innsbruck in 2024. It provides a very good overview of the current topics in molecular and cellular bioenergetics and also offers young scientists the opportunity to present their work in short lectures and posters. Alternating with the EBEC, the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) Bioenergetics takes place every second year and is regularly attended by many members of the Study Group. The Bioenergetics Study Group will hold the residential meeting “Perspectives in Bioenergetics 2023” in Rauischholzhausen in September. The organisers look forward to active participation and lively scientific discussions at the meeting. It is planned to establish “Perspectives in Bioenergetics” as a regular meeting of the Study Group to keep pace with the latest developments in the field.

Bioenergetics is a very dynamic field of research and the Study Group needs your active participation to represent its many aspects. Join the Study Group via this website or contact the speaker team for more information.
